Van Gogh Comes to Life

Vincent Van Gogh created some of the most distinct, enduring images ever: sunflowers, starry nights, painfully honest self-portraits. Now, you’re about to see them in a completely new way.

A movie called Loving Vincent is in the works, a biopic of the troubled painter. The script is drawn from 800 letters written by Van Gogh; the narrative unfolds via his paintings, each one painstakingly animated.

Loving Vincent is billed as the first fully painted feature film in the world. It’s directed by Polish painter/director Dorota Kobiela, and is currently in production in Gdańsk.

Because 120 of Van Gogh’s paintings are used in the film, and the animation process is sooooo painstaking, the team is recruiting gifted oil painters to help out. Artists are invited to submit their portfolios via their website, and if accepted, will be trained in Van Gogh’s style at the studio. Nice way to spend your summer.

There’s currently no official release date for Loving Vincent (although early 2017 is a good guess), but in the meantime, take a look at the amazing trailer.
